Covid-19 Short Story - Tomorrow is A Happy Day

Tomorrow is a happy day
( Written in both Chinese  and  English)

I can see from my window that the rain outside forms a river flowing down the street.  This scenery reminds me of our wedding day 50 years ago.

On that day, Hong Kong was hit by a typhoon, and the rain was so heavy that all the cars parked on the steep road where I lived were washed away.

Our marriage tradition requires the groom to collect me and bring me to his parents' house for a tea ceremony.   When the groom came, the bridesmaids blocked the entrance.  They would  not open the door, but would ask the groom many questions until the groom gave a wrong answer.

One of the bridesmaids asked when our first kiss took place.  The groom said this happened on our second date.  The correct answer is when the groom said goodbye to me on our first date.  Because the answer was wrong, the bridesmaids demanded a sum of money to punish the groom.  Soon the bridesmaids and the bridesmen started argumentative negotiations on the amount.  They bargained on the amount until the bridesmaids were satisfied.  Such fun memories of the wedding day made my eyes wet.

Since my husband was accepted  to the ICU for COVID-19 treatment, I have not seen him for nearly a month.  The more I think of him, the more marriage scenes of our happy and hard days appeared in my mind, and I began to cry.

Suddenly, the phone rang, waking me up from my memory.  I wiped my tears with my hand and picked up the phone.  The hospital said that my husband had recovered from Covid-19 and would be ready to go home tomorrow.

I screamed at the top of my voice with joyful tears that he could come home to celebrate our 50th wedding anniversary tomorrow.

Covid-19 Short Story - Once loved ( in English and Chinese )

Once loved *** short story written in both English and Chinese

I stood in front of the window, looking at the drizzling rain.  In the mist, I saw his back and he was raising his right hand to wave bye bye.  At that moment, I realized that I couldn't afford to lose him.  He was the person I once loved.  Now I still love him but it is impossible to like him anymore.  What should I do?

At this time, my heart is filled with nothing except sadness, pain, and hurt. I am the only one who understands what these feelings are.  Am I so fragile that I can't stand being hurt.  Deep inside I still really want to hug him and hold onto him for a good cry.  But I know that this is no longer possible.  I really want to cry, but I have no tears.  I opened the window and let the rain hit my face.  The rain drops run on my face as if my tears are pouring down my face.

Covid-19 Short Story - Hosiptal beds are full

Short Story written in both English and Chinese

Hosiptal beds are full ( Fiction)

Although it was raining heavily outside, someone knocked on my window from outside.  She is Mrs. Jordan, a neighbor living across my house.  I asked her what happened, and she replied in sign language.

Yesterday she saw  an ambulance parking in front of the house next to me.  The ambulance staff carried Mr. Ferrari into his house.   His wife then walked out of the ambulance and followed the staff into the house.  Afterwards the ambulance drove away.

Mrs. Jordan said she wanted to ask the ambulance staff about what has happened.  Given the pandemic distancing situation, she felt that it wasn’t appropriate to do so.

This morning she received the notice from the local “50+ Senior Living Association” notice that both Mr. and Mrs. Ferrari have been confirmed to be infected with the virus.  The isolation beds in the local  hospital dealing with the new virus were full.  So based on hospital priority order, they were sent home to recover on their own.

Mrs. Jordan is now raising money from the neighborhood to buy daily necessities and food for Mr. and Mrs Ferrari and put them in front of their house.

After I listened to the sad story, I put some money in an envelope.   I then put on a mask, opened the window, and handed the envelope to Mrs. Jordan.

As soon as I opened the window, rain drops splashed on my face.  Knowing myself living alone in a senior community, a sudden sadness hit my heart.  Such pain is difficult to describe and cannot expect anyone to understand how painful it was.  At that moment my tears mixed with the raindrops were all over my face.
