March 31 Last chapter of new book "Don't Give Up - 抗病良言"

March 31 Last chapter of new book "Don't Give Up - 抗病良言"
A voice from a caregiver...

127. The temptation to complain ***

Continuously suffering pain day by day either physically or psychologically is like eating the rhizome of Chinese goldthread. The bitter taste is beyond description. No one can understand what you are going through under these circumstances. Actually there aren’t many people in this world who are willing to deliver charcoal to keep people warm; but there are many people who are delighted to deliver flowers to celebrate people’s promotions. What you really should do is to make sure you have a positive attitude and be at ease in handling your current difficult time.

128. After the bitterness comes the sweetness ***

Life may not necessary be perfect. It is common that 8 or 9 life events out of 10 are unpleasant. Being sick is one of them but you need to struggle to help your patient to fight against his/her disease. Both of you need to turn your inner bitter feeling into a new strength to help you become positive, and ultimately turn all bitterness into sweetness.

129. Family values ***

Be thankful that you have family members around you. It is fate that has brought everyone together to share both sadness and happiness. Although taking care of a patient requires a lot of sweat and hard work, it is, in fact, a privilege to be in a position to have the strength to take care of your patient. You should thank Almighty God for giving you such opportunity to show your compassion of taking care of your patient.

130. Put on a sincere smile ***

Wear a smile everyday. This will help you to become open-minded and willing to take things easy and relax. Yet, you can choose to wear a bitter wrinkled face and live a miserable life. Why do you want to do that? Why don’t you smile everyday? The truth of the matter is that a smiling face worth’s a lot of money. Sometimes you can’t buy people’s smile even though you may be filthy rich.

March 30 New Book "Don"t Give Up - 抗病良言"
A voice from a caregiver...

123. Being a caregiver ***

If you want to perform your duty well as a caregiver, you must be healthy. Only if you are healthy and in a good spirit can you take good care of your patient, help him/her to relieve his/her stress and lead him/her to the road of speedy recovery.

124. Treasure this lucky chance of taking care of your patient ***

Even though you have to take care of your patient, you should not worry about it but have confidence in yourself that you can do it. You should thank God for that with a smile. Thank Him for giving you this opportunity of being together with your patient and having this golden opportunity to take good care of your patient. Treasure this lucky chance.

125. Bring along a sense of optimism ***

Always maintain a positive attitude when taking care of your patient. Look at the brighter side of everything and you will find something good.

126. Show compassion ***

Regardless what your destiny is, everything is a gracious gift from heaven. As long as you have put in your best effort in whatever you are doing, you have done your part and there is no good reason to complain about heaven and earth. By showing compassion in the care of your patient, you can consider yourself a good person with a good conscience and that you should live peacefully and move on with your life.

March 29 New Book "Don't Give Up - 抗病良言 之 空間"

March 29 New Book "Don't Give Up - 抗病良言"
A voice from a cargiver...

119. Space ***

Everybody must have some space of their own. Caregivers are no exceptions to the rule. Take half an hour to do something on your own, for yourself. You can read an interesting article, write a piece of prose, or record some of your daily activities in your journal. Finding time to sing a little is just as good.

120. Too much stress ***

When you have too much stress, you may end up with insufficient sleep. It can also affect your mood to the degree that your mood is unstable and it makes you feel that you are useless. At this moment, your best bet is to perform some stress relief exercises e.g. yoga or massage. Such exercises may bring back your peaceful mind.

121. Feeling tired easily***

If you feel tired easily and this happens daily, it is an indicator that you may be sick. Don’t ignore this situation. Ask yourself whether there is anything that bothers you; what might have caused you to become unhappy or are you having stress from being a caregiver. Once you find out the answers, take appropriate action to deal with the situation.

122. Get medical help as soon as you can***

Get medical help as soon as you discover you are sick. Pay attention to your daily diet. Eat more fruits and drink more water. Get up early and retire early at night. Breathe deeply when faced with stress. Relax and keep up a good spirit.

March 28, 2012 New Book "Don't Give Up - 抗病良言 之 求助"

March 28, 2012 New Book "Don't Give Up - 抗病良言"
A voice from a caregiver.

115. Seeking assistance ***

When you feel you cannot handle the situation, you should seek assistance. Seeking assistance doesn’t mean that you are incompetent; it also doesn’t mean that you are irresponsible for being a caregiver. On the contrary, your patient will feel pleased that you seek assistance. This move, in fact, has reduced the stress on your patient.

116. Support group ***

One of the best ways to look for assistance is to join a support group. The support group is a place where people can comfort each other and you can learn from other people’s experience. You can solicit their suggestions on how to help you cope with your current situation.

117. A happy moment ***

Every night before you retire, try to look for a happy moment that happened during the day. This includes the kiss you gave to your patient, your holding hands with him/her when you talked to him/her, a word of thank you and a word of appreciation from your patient. Thinking about these moments will make you happy and help you sleep well.

118. Methods of reducing stress ***

Maintaining a smile is the best medicine to relieve stress. The best method is to laugh together with your patient. Watch a comedy movie together. It is even better if you both laugh freely and have a big laugh appearing to be closing your eyes and showing your teeth. It is a good thing to have a happy day and leave behind some happy memories.

March 27 New Book "Don't Give Up - 抗病良言 之 用智慧解難"

March 27 New Book "Don't Give Up - 抗病良言"
Voice from a caregiver.

113. Use your wisdom to handle difficult times ***

In everybody’s life, there are ups and downs. As long as you are willing to accept adversity and use your wisdom to handle difficult times, the adversity you encounter need not result in a bitter experience. You may even be able to transcend your adversity and free yourselves from needless concerns.

114. The road of life can be rugged ***

From birth to death, most people will have things that cannot be completed and problems that cannot be solved. Life journey is full of rugged roads. It isn’t easy to walk through these roads and at times you may feel you can’t move forward. In this situation, the best way to overcome an obstacle is to ask for external assistance.

March 26 New Book "Don't Give Up - 抗病良言 之 須要有朋友"

March 26 New Book "Don't Give Up - 抗病良言"
Voice from a caregiver

111. We all need friends ***

No one can live without friends. Under conditions of stress, you definitely need true friends. It isn’t easy to develop good relationships. Treasure your friends. Whenever you have time, get together with your friends. Getting updates from each other and talking about the good old days can represent a form of joyful entertainment. Whenever you feel lonely, get together with your friends. Your feeling of loneliness will disappear.

112. Find someone to talk to ***

How many people are willing to deliver charcoal to people in winter times? But there are many people who are willing to deliver flowers to celebrate other people’s success. Be careful with whom you want to share your sorrow with. Only you, yourself, can understand what, and how you’re going through during rough times. Choose a person whom you can trust before you share your sorrow with them.

March 25, 2012 New Book "Don't Give Up - 抗病良言 之 建立新興趣"

March 25, 2012 New Book "Don't Give Up - 抗病良言"
Voice from a caregiver.

109. Develop a new hobby ***

As a caregiver, in addition to taking care of your patient, you need to be more open-minded. Try to spend some time to develop a new interest. Diverting your energy to a new interest will help you get rid of any bitter feeling you may harbor. By doing so, you will see the light of the day. Definitely this will reduce your stress and make you become optimistic to move forward.

110. Your own time ***

Everyone should have some time for themselves. Make good use of this time. Take a rest or take care of your personal affairs. In addition, everyday take some time to find a quiet place and pray to Almighty God wishing for speedy recovery for your patient.

March 24 New Book "Don't Give Up - 抗病良言 之 旅程會輕鬆"

March 24 New Book "Don't Give Up - 抗病良言"
Voice from a caregiver.

107. It can be a relaxing journey ***

Life is a journey and you are carrying a heavy baggage. If you want to travel light, you either have to give up your baggage or need to clean up your baggage. Discard your excessive worries and your negative attitude. If you can do that, your journey will be a relaxing one.

108. Clean up your baggage ***

If you are not willing to clean up your baggage, you will have to carry a heavy bag on your shoulders. Such a burden can only get heavier everyday. It will cause your movement to become very uncomfortable. If you continue to carry your baggage, your days ahead will be gloomier. But if you are willing to clean up your baggage, your days ahead will be relaxing.

March 23 New Book "Don't Give Up - 抗病良言 之 磨練"

March 23 New Book "Don't Give Up - 抗病良言"
Voice from a caregiver.

105. Disciplines ***

Plum blossoms in winter can be a model for us to follow. Unlike flowers grown in greenhouse, they can withstand severe cold weather. If you want to develop tranquility, you need to have a healthy mind. Only then, will you be able to help make your patient feel peaceful. If your patient feels at ease, you will have the same feeling too.

106. A psychologist can help your patient be positive ***

If your patient continues to harbor internal resentment and is negative about everything, it will slow down the recovery process. It may even make the patient feel the whole experience more painful than it need be. Needless to say, the family members will worry about the patient’s attitude. Under this situation, the best way to solve it is to ask for help from a psychologist. The psychologist may be able to help relieve the patient’s stress.

March 22, 2012 New Book "Don't Give Up - 抗病良言 之 洗耳恭聽"

March 22, 2012 New Book "Don't Give Up - 抗病良言"
Voice from a caregiver

103. Listen with full attention ***

Dealing with a patient’s complaints is one of the most difficult tasks. When your patient is full of complaints and anger, and utters words of giving up his/her life even though there is hope of recovery, silence is your best response. What you can do is to listen to them with sympathy and they will feel better.

104. Be optimistic ***

Try to look for opportunities whereby you can say encouraging words. Talk about the past happy events. This will give the patient a chance to recall his/her past happy experiences. In this way, you will be able to change your patient’s attitude and direct him/her to talk about topics related to happy times instead of dwelling on negative topics.

March 21 New Book "Don't Give Up - 抗病良言 之 歡欣接受"

March 21 New Book "Don't Give Up - 抗病良言"
A voice from a caregiver

101. Accept reality with grace ***

In the world, whenever there is gain, there is also bound to be loss. It is akin to the existence of high tides and ebb tides. Life is no difference. It has birth, aging, being sick and death. Why do you resist reality? Why don’t you accept reality with grace? If you are willing to accept that tranquility in life sometimes is upset, you will feel tranquility inside you.

102. Positive and negative ***

Look for the positive side of each bitter experience. Once you find the brighter side of each experience, even though you may not be able to get rid of your pain, you will, at least, feel at ease. If you handle your bitter situation with a negative attitude, it will make you feel gloomier and there is no way you can get rid of the painful feeling.

March 17 New Book "Don't Give Up - 抗病良言 之 靈性的成長"

March 17 New Book "Don't Give Up - 抗病良言"
Voice from a caregiver.

99. Intelligence growth ***

Why do people live? Have they come to this world to suffer or to enjoy life? To avoid facing reality is futile. You need to accept the fact that adversity is part of life. Each bitter experience is a challenge by itself. It can enrich your personal knowledge and help develop your intelligence and wisdom.

100. Smile as often as you can

Think about the current problem that you are facing. Instead of complaining about the situation, why don’t you ask yourself what can be done to solve the problem. Don’t simply assume that it is a hopeless situation. Instead ask the doctor to see what can be done. Instead of bursting into tears, why don’t you handle the situation with a smile?

March 16 New Book "Don't Give Up - 抗病良言 之 美酒佳餚"

March 16 New Book "Don't Give Up - 抗病良言"
Voice from a caregiver.

97. Good wine and good delicacies ***

Although good wine and good delicacies are tempting, you must verify that the patient is allowed to drink and eat such delicacies. If it is no good for the patient, encourage the patient not to drink and eat this type of food. You need to protect your patient’s health.

98. Be aware of the patient’s dietary restrictions ***

Be aware of the patient’s dietary restrictions. Make sure the patient doesn’t drink or eat anything that is no good for him/her. If there is laxity in this respect, not only the patient will suffer the consequences, but also the family members will worry about the patient’s suffering. Don’t let the patient over-eat to satisfy his/her excessive appetite. Only allow them to eat the right portion of healthy food.

March 15 New Book "Don't Give Up - 抗病良言 之 悲哀憤怒"

March 15 New Book "Don't Give Up - 抗病良言"
Voice from a caregiver.

95. Sorrow and anger ***

Each patient's feeling is different. It is natural to see a patient being sad and miserable. If the patient wants to cry, let him/her cry. There is no good medicine in the world that can change a patient’s feeling and attitude. It has to come from them.

96. Telephone's disturbance ***

Although it is a good thing to receive calls from friends and relatives to send regards to the patient, it can be both annoying and disturbing when the phone doesn’t stop ringing. Besides, the patient may not be in a good mood to answer the same questions over and over again. The best way to handle this is to put the phone on silent mode and transfer the line to another line. Let the patient have some quiet time.

March 14 New Book "Don't Give Up - 抗病良言"
Voice from a caregiver.

93. Put on a smiling face ***

When you see your patient suffer from his/her illness, you will naturally feel pained as well. But you should remind yourself that you shouldn’t put on a bitter wrinkled face. That face will only add more to your patient’s worries. The best thing to do is to put on a smiling face. That will put everyone at ease.

94. Always give encouragement to your patient ***

Always give encouragement to your patient and be tolerant when attending to the needs of your patient. Don’t let your patient’s negativity affect your attitude. If your patient is negative, you should be more positive in handling the situation. You may consider getting assistance from a psychologist to help the patient to change his/her attitude to cope with the situation.

When people are sad, you join in their sadness. This can only make the situation become sadder. It is like walking in the dark, there is no light and it can only get darker. Why don’t you change your attitude? Look at the bright side of everything and it will make everyone feel better.

92. Focal point ***

If you make your painful feeling the focal point of your feelings, how can you expect to be happy? If you place all your attention on worries, you will not have a peaceful mind. But if you orient your thinking towards happy events, you will end up with a positive attitude. With such an attitude, you naturally will think of the bright side of everything and things will work out as you wish.

March 12 New Book "Don't Give Up - 抗病良言"
Voice from a caregiver.

89. Moron dream ***

It is difficult to hold in your tears when no one is around at midnight. You can’t accept the fact that your patient has to go through such painful experience. You have a dream and hope that there will be new medicines that can help cure cancers. No one can understand what you are going through and why you have a dream of counting on miracles.

90. Worries ***

If you cannot accept reality, you will definitely feel empty and at a loss. Your mind is full of worries. You worry about the progress of your patient. You worry about what will happen tomorrow. Your excessive worries may not be necessary. Have you ever thought that tomorrow can be a good day?

Voice from a caregiver.

87. Chemotherapy medicine ***

There is a chemotherapy medicine which has the side effect of burning both the hands and feet. In order to reduce the side effect, the patient has to put both hands and feet into ice cubes during chemo application. You can imagine how painful it is to put hands and feet in ice. When you see your patient going through such process, naturally it hurts you too.

88. Life can be unfair ***

We can’t blame you having resentment against heaven and earth. It is OK for you to feel the world is unfair that your patient has to go through such painful experience. It is also natural for you to feel living in this world is more cruel than living in hell. No one can understand how you go through this and the hatred that you may have against this world. Yet you can’t share your sorrow with your patient because you don’t want him/her to worry about you.

Life goes on

Life goes on

Life, at times, is nothing but a rugged road full of unanticipated sorrows. Within a month, God has taken away my great wife and yesterday my beloved mother-in-law passed away. Although both houses are empty, our love remains in both the Chan’s and Yuen’s families. It is very difficult to let go of our beloved ones. I have no choice but accept reality. What I can do is to follow my fate, put on a smile with hidden sorrow and move on with my life.

March 8 - New Book "Don't Give Up - 抗病良言"
Message from a caregiver

83. Burst into tears sadly ***

Inevitably, it is natural to burst into tears sadly when you see your patient suffer serious pain. Sometimes you feel you are incapable of handling the current situation. You may feel depressed and think the world is covered with nothing but black clouds. It is difficult to describe your depressed mood. You feel like you have nothing but regrets. You regret that you are incapable of assisting your patient to recover and help him/her to reduce his/her suffering.

84. Don’t worry excessively ***

Sometimes the more you think about a thorny problem, the more intractable the problem appears to be. First, ask yourself how much worse the situation can become. Are you willing to accept the worst? Is there a chance that the disease will be cured? If the answer is positive, there is no reason to be overly worried.

March 5 New Book Don't Give Up 抗病良言 之 影響一家人

March 5 New Book Don't Give Up 抗病良言
Voice from a Cancer Patient Caregiver

81. Cancer affects the whole family ***

Cancer affects not only the patient but the whole family. What the patient needs the most is the support of everyone in the family. Unfortunately not everyone can afford time to take care of the patient. Usually it ends up only one family member becoming the primary caregiver. The stress level for this caregiver is not less than what the patient has to suffer. As a caregiver, you can be tired and lose sleep wearily.

82. Help the patient to convalesce ***

People shouldn’t underestimate the efforts required to carry the responsibility of being a caregiver. Apart from taking care of the patient, you need to understand his/her medical condition. Only then, will you be able to provide sentimental support and at times can speak on behalf of the patient. You must make sure your patient takes his/her medicine on time. You must do everything possible to help your patient recover speedily.
