Short Story: Taxi Ride
Darren was standing at the corner of 32nd East and Fifth Avenue at Korean Town, waiting for a taxi.
It was raining heavily. Darren was has been standing there for almost 20 minutes without any luck of getting a taxi. As soon as he was about to walk to the subway, a taxi stopped in front of him, letting people to get off.
As soon as he was about to go in. Someone put her hand over his and said. “May I share this one with you?”
Darren raised her head and looked at her, wearing a pair of glasses a trench coat and long hair soaking wet.
Darren put his umbrella over her head and said, “Where are you heading?”
“Radio City Hall.”
Darren said, “Go in.”
She moved inside and sat in the further end. Darren moved in and said, “I am Darren and I am going to Radio City
Hall too.”
“What a coincidence! I’m Josephine.”
There weren’t much conversation, the taxi stopping at the Radio City Hall. They both walked separately to look for their partners.
Mary Poppins was the evening show. He was hoping Doreen would come to join him, looking at an empty seat next to him.
When the movie finished, he discovered Josephine sitting one role in front him with an empty seat next to her.
Josephine suggested to buy Darren a drink to thank him for the taxi ride.
Author’s notes:
Josephine’s empty seat belonged to a married man whom she dated for always two years.
Darren’s empty seat belonged to his wife who is sick with cancer.
