As soon as Dominic got home in Boston from a business trip in New York, he received a text message from his girl friend, Karen, saying, "Urgent. Meet me at the coffee shop at the Four Season Hotel in one hour. I have a secret to tell you in person."
Dominic called Karen immediately, but there was no answer. He looked at his watch and decided he should leave the house immediately so that he could be there on time.
On the way to the hotel, a Mercedes-AMG overtook a car causing an accident involving five cars. Dominic's car was one of them. His car was hit by both a car on the opposite lane and the car behind him. A tyre out of nowhere and a big piece of metal flew straight to Dominic's car and broke the front window glass. A piece of it hit Dominic's head and blood flew out covering his face.
His phone kept on ringing and eventually turned to voice mail. A message was left saying, "Where are you? I can't wait to tell you what I decided."
The whole highway was blocked by rows of cars on both sides. It was impossible for an ambulance to go through. A helicopter was used to carry Dominic to the local hospital.
The emergency staff wheeled him to the operation room. After eight hours of operation, he was unconscious and never woke up in the New England medical center. Karen never showed up to visit him.
After six months, Dominic's parents moved him to Sinai Hospital in New York City. Since they lived in Manhattan, it was more convenient for them to take care of Dominic over there.
Despite all the efforts of the best doctors in town, Dominic was still unconscious although it seemed to his parents that there might have been some minor improvement.
Two years later, a group of reporters were gathering in front of the Sinai Hospital interviewing Dr. Podell. He was then conducting a clinical trial to wake up people from their unconsciousness. Dominant was one of the participants. His parents were there but refused to give any comments.
Dominic's room was guarded by two security guards. A lady holding the hand of a little boy requested the guards to let them visit Dominic.
The guards refused to let them in although the lady begged with tears. She pushed the guards away and forced to get inside the room. Both guards stopped her. The kid was scared and cried loudly.
A nurse came to give the lady a shot and another nurse carried the kid to comfort him. A policewoman came to investigate the situation.
Coincidentally Dominic's parents came to visit their son. As soon as they saw the lady, Dominic's mother said with a big surprise, "Karen, is it you, Karen?"
They all went inside the room. Dominic was still unconscious.
Karen slowly was able to control her emotion. She held the kid sleeping on her lap with one hand and held Dominic's hand with the other hand.
She told Dominic, "Since you didn't show up at the coffee shop, I left in a hurry to the airport to see my father in Tampa. His illness turned bad suddenly. I supposed to tell you that I didn't want the baby and secretly made an appointment for abortion. My father passed away and I didn't have time for the abortion. Your phone was out of service. I decided to stay with my mom to keep her company."
Her eyes started to get red. "I couldn't find you until I saw the news of the clinical trial."
Her tears started to fall onto the kid's face drop by drop. The kid opened his eyes and sat up.
Karen said, "Tom, this is your father. Say Daddy."
Tom raised his head and looked at Karen. Karen nodded. Tom turned to Dominic and said, "Daddy."
Karen felt Dominic's fingers moving in her hand.
